The Kano State Government has directed all 44 local government areas (LGAs) to contribute N15.2 million each, totaling N670 million, for the procurement and refurbishment of vehicles for the Kano Emirate Council under the leadership of Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II.
A letter dated March 25, 2025, which has recently surfaced on social media, revealed that the funds would be deducted from the State/Local Government Joint Account and paid to Sottom Synergy Resources Ltd, a private firm contracted to supply four brand-new vehicles and refurbish two classic models.
Titled “Conveyance of Approval for the Release of Funds”, the letter was signed by Abubakar S. Dabo, Director of Local Government Inspection, on behalf of the Commissioner for Local Government Affairs.
“I am directed to convey Government’s approval for the release of the aggregate sum of N15,227,272.72 per LGA… to repair 2 No. vehicles and supply 4 No. vehicles to the Kano Emirate Council through Sottom Synergy Resources Ltd,” the letter read in part.
A breakdown of the approved spending indicates that the N670 million will cover: complete refurbishment of a 1969 Rolls Royce (DH 420),restoration of a Cadillac limousine anf rocurement of four 2024 Toyota Land Cruiser VXR (full option) vehicles
The letter also instructed all LGA chairmen to ensure strict adherence to due process in the disbursement and execution of the directive.
The development has sparked mixed reactions across social media.
Critics have questioned the timing and priority of such an expenditure, especially given the budgetary challenges and poor infrastructure facing many local governments.
One user Mubashshir Saidu wrote: “If it’s true, then this is oppression!!! Leaders should always pay attention to the condition of the common people! What’s the problem with Emir Sanusi or his palace and vehicle? Come on, people.”
Others, however, defended the move, suggesting it reflects the government’s intent to restore the prestige and functionality of the Kano Emirate following Emir Sanusi II’s recent reinstatement.
As of press time, the Kano State Government has not issued an official response to the public debate.
