President Bola Tinubu has directed all political appointees under his administration who intend to contest in the 2027 general elections to resign their positions on or before March 31.
The directive was disclosed on Tuesday in a statement issued by the Head of Information and Public Relations at the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (OSGF), Dewan Goshit.
The move is seen as a preemptive step to enforce political neutrality within government and prevent the use of public office for electoral advantage ahead of the 2027 polls.
The development comes amid recent adjustments to Nigeria’s electoral timetable by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), which has already set January 16, 2027, for the presidential and National Assembly elections.
Governorship and State Houses of Assembly elections have been scheduled for February 6, 2027.
INEC had earlier fixed February 20, 2027, for the presidential poll and March 6 for governorship elections but reviewed the dates following the repeal of the Electoral Act 2022 and the enactment of a new Electoral Act 2026, which necessitated a restructuring of the election calendar.
The initial timetable had also drawn criticism from political stakeholders, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, who warned that the February date coincided with the Ramadan fasting period and could suppress voter turnout, particularly among Muslim populations.
With the revised dates now in place, Tinubu’s directive signals the early commencement of political realignments within the ruling establishment, as appointees with electoral ambitions are expected to vacate their offices in the coming weeks.
The order is likely to trigger a wave of resignations across federal ministries, departments, and agencies, potentially reshaping the political landscape ahead of what is already shaping up to be a fiercely contested 2027 election cycle.
