JUST-IN: Saudi Arabia’s Grand Mufti Sheikh Abdulaziz Al-Sheikh Is Dead

Saudi Arabia’s Grand Mufti and Head of the Council of Senior Scholars, Sheikh Abdulaziz Al-Sheikh, has passed away at the age of 82.

According to a statement from the Royal Court, the prominent cleric died in Riyadh on Tuesday morning. His funeral prayer will be held at the Imam Turki bin Abdullah Mosque in Riyadh after the Asr prayer today.

Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Salman, has directed that funeral prayers in absentia be performed at the Grand Mosque in Makkah, the Prophet’s Mosque in Madinah, and in all mosques across the Kingdom. Both King Salman and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman have extended condolences to his family, the Saudi people, and Muslims worldwide.

“With the passing of Al-Sheikh, Saudi Arabia and the Islamic world have lost a distinguished scholar who made significant contributions to the service of Islam and Muslims,” the Royal Court said.

Nigeria’s former Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Ali Isa Pantami, also offered condolences on his verified X handle, praying for Allah to forgive the late cleric, elevate his rank among the rightly guided, and grant him a place in Jannatul Firdaus.

Sheikh Abdulaziz Al-Sheikh was appointed as the third Grand Mufti of the Kingdom in 1999 (1420 AH), succeeding Sheikh Abdulaziz bin Baz.

Born on 30 November 1943 (3 Dhul-Hijjah 1362 AH) in Makkah, Sheikh Abdulaziz grew up as an orphan after losing his father at the age of eight. He memorised the Qur’an in his youth under Sheikh Muhammad bin Sinan and studied Sharia under the guidance of former Grand Mufti Sheikh Muhammad bin Ibrahim Al-Sheikh.

Despite losing his eyesight in his twenties, he pursued his studies with determination, learning under eminent scholars including Sheikh Abdulaziz bin Baz and Sheikh Abdulaziz Al-Shathri.

He graduated from the College of Sharia at Imam Muhammad bin Saud Islamic University in 1965, specialising in Arabic and Islamic sciences.

Sheikh Abdulaziz began his career as a teacher at Imam al-Da’wah Institute before becoming a professor at the College of Sharia and the Higher Institute of Judiciary. He supervised numerous theses at Imam University and Umm al-Qura University, shaping generations of scholars.

He also served as a khatib at several mosques, most notably the Imam Turki bin Abdullah Mosque in Riyadh, and was among the leading preachers at Masjid Namirah in Arafat, where his Hajj sermons were followed by millions worldwide.
