JUST-IN: Former Minister, Ebun Oyagbola, Dies At 93

Former Minister of National Planning and former Ambassador to Mexico, with concurrent accreditation to Panama, Costa Rica, and Guatemala Chief Mrs Ebun Oyagbola died at the weekend at the age of 93.

The Olu of Ilaro and Paramount Ruler of Yewaland, His Royal Majesty, Oba (Dr.) Kehinde Gbadewole Olugbenle confirmed her demise in a condolence message made available to the newsmen.

Oba Olugbenle described her passing as a “monumental loss to Yewaland and Nigeria at large.”

He lauded Chief Oyagbola as a frontline politician and astute diplomat who played a pivotal role in shaping the political landscape of the Second Republic.

The monarch highlighted her contributions to the socio-economic transformation of Yewaland, particularly her role in the construction of the Obele-Ilaro-Papalanto-Sagamu Road.

Oba Olugbenle extended his deepest condolences to her family, the people of Yewaland, Ogun State, and the nation, praying for strength and comfort during this period of mourning.

Born in 1932 in Igan Alade, Yewa North Local Government Area of Ogun State, Chief Oyagbola’s remarkable career was defined by her trailblazing leadership and commitment to public service. In 1979, she made history as Nigeria’s first female cabinet minister, serving as Minister of National Planning under President Shehu Shagari.

Following her ministerial tenure, she was appointed Nigeria’s Ambassador to Mexico, with concurrent accreditation to Panama, Costa Rica, and Guatemala. Her diplomatic efforts significantly strengthened Nigeria’s international relations and underscored her unwavering dedication to national service.

In recognition of her outstanding contributions to community and national development, Oba Olugbenle conferred upon her the title of the first Iyalode of Yewaland in 2021, honoring her leadership and service to the region.
