The United Kingdom Home Secretary, Yvette Cooper, has revealed that 19,000 illegal immigrants have been deported under the Labour government.
She made this known during an interview on GBN station and on the Home Office website.
“To rebuild public confidence in the immigration system, we need to show that the rules are respected and enforced.
“That’s why, as part of the government’s plan for change, we have put significant additional resources into immigration enforcement and returns, so those who have no right to be here, particularly those who have committed crimes in our country, are removed as swiftly as possible,” Cooper said.
According to the Home Office, nearly 19,000 failed asylum seekers, foreign criminals, and other immigration offenders have been returned to countries across Africa, Asia, Europe, and South America since the election.
These deportations follow a significant escalation in immigration enforcement efforts.
The Home Office noted that the current rate of returns is the highest seen since 2018 and includes the four largest returns charter flights in UK history, with over 850 people deported.
Between July 5, 2024, and January 31, 2025, the government redeployed 1,000 staff to focus on immigration enforcement.
During this period, enforced returns increased by 24 percent, removals of foreign national offenders rose by 21 percent, and illegal working raids surged by 38 percent compared to the same period a year earlier.
In January alone, Immigration Enforcement teams raided 828 premises—nail bars, convenience stores, restaurants, and car washes—marking a 48 percent rise from the previous year.
The raids led to 609 arrests, a 73 percent increase from the 352 arrests recorded in January 2024.
The Home Office also issued 1,090 civil penalty notices, warning that employers found liable could face fines of up to £60,000 per worker.
“For many, working illegally in the UK begins with false promises about their ability to live and work here, creating a dangerous draw for people willing to risk their lives by crossing the Channel in small boats,” the Home Office explained.
Looking ahead, the Home Secretary stated that the government plans to introduce counter terror-style powers to disrupt and dismantle organised people-smuggling gangs.
This is part of the Border Security, Asylum and Immigration Bill, which seeks to equip law enforcement with stronger powers, including the ability to seize mobile phones from illegal entrants before their arrest.
In addition, the government will host a landmark Border Security Summit on March 31 and April 1 at Lancaster House in London.
The summit will bring together delegates from over 40 countries and key international institutions, including the European Union, to discuss strategies for tackling organised immigration crime and migrant smuggling.
“This summit will be a watershed moment in the UK’s fight against organised immigration crime,” Cooper said.
