I’ve Raised My Children Alone For Seven Years – Father Of Slain WAEC Student

Odunayo Alade, the father of the 15-year-old student, Kehinde Alade, who was killed by a stray bullet allegedly fired during a police chase, has revealed he has been solely responsible for raising his children since his wife left seven years ago.

“Their mother abandoned us seven years ago, and I made a promise to myself to give my children the best life possible,” he told reporters.

“I’ve worked tirelessly to provide for them, often sacrificing my own needs. I have turned down opportunities to remarry because I wanted to focus on raising my kids. I often wonder which woman would accept me and my situation without jeopardising their well-being.”

Kehinde, an SS1 secondary school student, was allegedly struck by a stray bullet near Gbagi Market when police and traffic officials chased a vehicle believed to be carrying internet fraudsters.

Alade described the event, noting that he was driving his children to school, as was his routine. He added that there were about five children in the car, some heading to the Olatundun area and others to Olabidan.

According to him, he had stopped to inflate a tire nearby and noticed another vehicle approaching, unaware it belonged to the Oyo State Traffic Management Authority.

He explained that a confrontation occurred when the officers tried to stop his vehicle. They struck his car, prompting him to reverse to avoid them, not realising additional vehicles were in pursuit. Another collision followed when a towing vehicle hit his car, and as he tried to escape, he heard a gunshot.

Kehinde’s twin brother alerted their father to the injury. “He said, ‘Daddy, stop, Taiwo has been shot.’ I pulled over and saw that the bullet had struck him. People helped rush him to UCH, but he died.”

According to Alade, one official opened the back door during the chase and saw the children. “I didn’t know they were chasing Yahoo boys or not. I was just taking my children to school,” he said.

He added that Kehinde was to turn 14 in November, and his elder brother was the one sitting for WAEC.

Overwhelmed with grief, Alade demanded justice, insisting that those responsible face consequences. He stressed that no parent should suffer the agony of losing a child in such a tragic and avoidable way.

He described Kehinde as a promising student with big aspirations, full of enthusiasm for learning and his future. Alade expressed his anguish over the abrupt loss of his son’s potential, blaming the incident on the careless actions of those meant to ensure public safety. He called for clarity on the circumstances of the tragedy and sought answers for his son’s untimely death.

Meanwhile, Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has ordered a full investigation into the incident. The officer alleged to have fired the fatal shot is currently in custody.

Force Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, said in a statement: “The IGP condemned the incident and assured that the officer involved in the shooting has been taken into custody while a full-scale investigation is underway. He equally reiterated that the process will be transparent, and its findings made public to ensure justice is duly served.”
