Nigerian singer and songwriter, Chike Osebuka, says he has no plans to get married at the moment, describing marriage as a “stupid step.”
The 32-year-old artiste, known for his soulful and love-themed songs, made the remark during an interview with media personality, Chude Jideonwo.
When asked when he was getting married, he replied that he does not consider marriage a priority.
“In my personal opinion, in fact, I think it’s a stupid step to get married, that’s my opinion,” he said.
Chike, popular for his romantic ballads, also revealed that his happiness is tied to financial stability.
“For me to be happy, to be honest, I need a lot of money.
“This is not even canal, I won’t lie to you, I like money. I want money,” he added.
Reflecting on his career journey, he said he never envisioned making a living from music until after his university education.
“I would say maybe right after my university, I knew music is what I’ll do for a living.
“I won’t say I knew before, to be honest, because I just used to sing and disturb everybody around me,” Chike said.
The singer recounted moments of financial struggle in his early career when he had to take acting jobs to survive.
“It was a tough part, I even had to start acting for like two years,” he said.
On finding success, Chike disclosed that his mother once asked him if he had joined a cult.
He also shared his disappointment with some friends who failed to support him when he needed funds to stage a show.
Chike said, “I remenber one time when I was about to do my show, and how much does the entire show cost, I think N400,000, if not less. because a lot of things were favours.
“And I called the friends I used to hang out with and drink with and, I mean, not, I’m not a drinker, but people I have fun with, and I knew the answer was no.
“But I just thought that I deserved the respect of telling me that, oh, you don’t have it, or you can’t do it now, or, oh man, I just, I flat out don’t have it.
“And with some of them, they just stopped picking my calls, you know, they just stopped.
“And it was, you know, a female friend of mine still that I went to, and for the first time, you know.
“At least I was comfortable around her enough to let out a couple of emotions, and I remember I actually cried that day.
“And she just looked at me, and she was like, Chike, don’t worry, I’ll give you the money, just go and concentrate.
“And that was, that’s how I got the money, literally gave me the money.”
Chike began his music career in 2015 following his participation in Project Fame.
He was the first runner-up on The Voice of Nigeria in 2016 and went on to release Fancy, his debut single, later that same year.
