Hundreds of thousands of Israelis joined a rally in Tel Aviv on Sunday, organizers said, calling on the government of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to reach an immediate truce with Hamas to free hostages held in Gaza.
The evening rally followed a day of protest across the country called for by the relatives of hostages as Israeli forces geared up to expand their offensive throughout the Palestinian enclave, despite widespread international condemnation and calls for an end to the war.
Families of the captives, along with their supporters, blocked several major roadways, waving Israeli flags and bearing signs featuring the hostages’ photographs. At least 38 people had been detained for disrupting public order by early afternoon, according to the Israeli police.
The streets of central Tel Aviv, usually clogged with office workers on the first day of Israel’s workweek, were strikingly empty on Sunday. But it was unclear how many people had joined the day of action that had been planned ahead of an evening protest.
The country’s largest labor association, the Histadrut, has declined to throw its weight behind the strike. And while some universities said they would participate, the strike was taking place during the academic summer break.
The Hostages and Missing Families Forum, which represents relatives of some of the captives, said on Sunday night that more than 400,000 people joined the evening protest in and around a Tel Aviv plaza known as Hostages Square.
After nearly two years of war, Israel says about 20 surviving hostages and the bodies of roughly 30 more are still in Gaza. The debate over how to bring them back has split Israeli society, pitting many of the hostage families and their allies against Mr. Netanyahu and his government.
