A sharp escalation in Middle East tensions has triggered global concern after Iran reportedly suspended tanker traffic through the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz, citing renewed Israeli military operations in Lebanon.
According to the semi-official Fars News Agency, the move came in direct response to what it described as intensified strikes by Israel, which Israeli authorities have characterised as their âheaviest bombardment yetâ targeting Hezbollah positions.
The blockade represents a significant escalation with potential implications for global oil supply and maritime security.
The report stated that two oil tankers were permitted to transit the strait earlier in the day, but only âafter obtaining permission from Iran.â
However, subsequent vessel movement was halted following fresh Israeli strikes, signaling a tightening of restrictions on one of the worldâs most critical energy corridors.
The Strait of Hormuz handles a substantial portion of global crude oil shipments, making any disruption a matter of international concern.
The development comes amid growing confusion over the status of a ceasefire agreement tied to the broader regional conflict.
Israeli officials, alongside U.S. President Donald Trump, have asserted that the current ceasefire framework does not extend to ongoing military operations against Hezbollah in Lebanon.
This stance directly contradicts claims by Shehbaz Sharif, who has been involved in mediation efforts, as well as narratives presented in Iranian state media regarding the scope of the ceasefire.
While the United States has reiterated that it is not directly participating in Israelâs military actions in Lebanon, diplomatic tensions continue to rise across the region.
Further highlighting the deteriorating situation, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi raised concerns over alleged âceasefire violations in Iran and Lebanonâ during a phone conversation with Pakistanâs army chief, according to an official statement.
Araghchi reportedly âexpressed appreciation for the constructive and responsible role of the Pakistani government and his continued and effective efforts to end the war and strengthen peace and security in the region.â
Hundreds of people were killed and wounded following a fresh wave of Israeli airstrikes across Lebanon, according to Lebanese Health Minister Rakan Nassereddine.
The development comes as the Israel Defence Forces (IDF) announced that it had completed what it described as its largest coordinated assault on Lebanese territory since the start of âOperation Roaring Lion.â
In a statement posted on its official X handle, the IDF said, âIn 10 minutes, the IDF completed the largest coordinated strike across Lebanon since the start of Operation Roaring Lion.â
The Israeli military disclosed that the operation targeted more than 100 linked to Hezbollah, including âheadquarters, military arrays, & command-and-control centers in Beirut, Beqaa and southern Lebanon.â
Providing further details, the IDF listed key targets to include âintelligence command centers and central headquarters used planning terror attacks,â as well as âinfrastructure of firepower and naval arrays, responsible for launching missiles.â
