The Iranian media has confirmed that a US helicopter, on a search mission for the American fighter jet has also been shot down in Iran.
The US search helicopter was hit by a projectile.
Iran had earlier shot down a United States fighter jet, according to claims by its authorities, with uncertainty surrounding the fate of the aircraftās crew.
A person familiar with the matter confirmed that a search is under way for the crew of the jet, following the reported incident, UK Guardian reports.
Iranian state media earlier reported that the aircraft brought down was an F-35 warplane, although this has not been independently verified.
The fate of the crew remains unclear, with no official statement yet from US authorities confirming their condition or whereabouts.
It follows reports by Iranian state media that the US military is searching for an American pilot of a downed aircraft in Iran, after earlier claims that Tehran had shot down a US F-35 fighter jet.
Iranās semi-official Tasnim news agency said the US is searching for a pilot āof a fighter jet that was attacked by the Iranian armed forces this morningā.
The agency had earlier published images it said showed the wreckage of the aircraft, though analysis suggests it may not be the model initially reported.
Providing expert insight, Peter Layton, a visiting fellow at the Griffith Asia Institute in Australia, told NBC News: āI think the structure looks like an F-15 and from the tail flash stripe markings from the 48th Fighter Wing, based at RAF Lakenheath in the United Kingdom.ā
His assessment indicates the aircraft could be an F-15E Strike Eagle rather than the F-35 initially reported by Iranian media.
Meanwhile, the Associated Press reported that a channel affiliated with Iranian state television broadcast information about the missing pilot.
The broadcast reportedly originated from Kohkilouyeh and Boyer-Ahmad province, a mountainous and rural region covering more than 15,500 square kilometres.
