Iran has arrested about 500 people accused of sharing sensitive information with enemy forces as Israeli and United States fighter jets continue to strike targets across the country, authorities said on Sunday.
The country’s police chief, Ahmadreza Radan, said some of the suspects were involved in serious offences, including providing intelligence that helped identify locations for airstrikes and filming attack sites before sending the footage to foreign actors.
According to Iranian media reports, the arrests were carried out in several regions. In northwestern Iran, authorities detained 20 people accused of transmitting details about military and security installations to Israel.
Another 10 suspects were arrested in the northeast for allegedly gathering intelligence on sensitive locations and economic infrastructure.
Security agencies also reported that three individuals were detained in the western province of Lorestan for allegedly attempting to incite unrest and disturb public order.
Iranian officials claim the arrests are part of efforts to counter spy networks allegedly activated by Israel and the United States amid the ongoing conflict.
The Revolutionary Guards’ intelligence arm said foreign powers were attempting to recruit informants inside the country to destabilise the state during the war.
According to Reuters, sources familiar with Israeli military strategy said that informants on the ground have provided tip-offs that helped Israel identify security checkpoints and other targets, marking what analysts describe as a new phase of the assault on Iran.
The arrests come months after widespread anti-government protests erupted across Iran earlier in the year.
Authorities had blamed the unrest on foreign interference, accusing Israel and the United States of backing efforts to undermine the country’s leadership.
