Internet Fraud: EFCC, ICPC Set Anti-corruption Agenda For Youths, Parents

Anti-corruption agencies and organizations have proffered solutions on how Nigeria youths could be rescued from their present lust for illicit wealth acquisition through different corrupt practices such as internet fraud.

The stakeholders who offered their submissions at the Town hall meeting in commemoration of the 2024 International anti-corruption Day at the South East zonal office of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, in Enugu, also assigned some responsibilities to parents on how to curtail the corruption scourge.

The theme for celebration was, β€œUniting the youths against corruption, shaping tomorrow’s integrity.”

According to the representatives of different anti-graft groups at the commemoration day, one of the major reasons for youth’s inclination to crime is because there is a lack of jobs for the youths in Nigeria.

In order to address the lack of jobs impasse, the stakeholders suggested that the school curriculum should include vocational studies so that the students could come out from schools with skills to face the society.

The stakeholders noted that the foundation for the crime was that there is no job, more so when some of the culprits secure bails and jump back into the society without any form of rehabilitation on them.

They stated that most of the youths were not aware of the dangers in the crimes they commit, and so an awareness mechanism should be put in place to sensitize the youths as a preventive measure.

Parents were also blamed and accused of setting bad precedents for their children who copy their bad behaviours. The EFCC was therefore tasked to tackle parents who engage in fraudulent activities such as budget padding, pointing out the idea of plea bargain is an anomaly which the youths see and are emboldened to commit more crimes.

β€œThe society is a reflection of our lost morals and values and so the EFCC needs to engage in reorientation to change the minds of parents. Otherwise how can a student come back home with an exotic car and the parents don’t raise an eyebrow? Leaders are not leading by example, the way we handle the elders’ matters go a long way to form the opinion of the youths,” the stakeholders noted.

They urged the EFCC to use the online and some other media channels the youths patronize to sensitize them and get them united in tackling some of the excesses of authorities such as the Judiciary which they identified as having lost the confidence of the society.

A representative of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, tied youths’ crime to use of drugs, noting that in 2024 alone, over 1.5 tons of different sorts of drugs were impounded by the NDLEA in Enugu and urged for all hands on deck to fight crime and drug use.

An ICPC official suggested that youths should be mobilized to track projects and money being spent on the constituency projects in their communities, noting that the youths should be made to hold leaders accountable in their appropriation of funds.

The Acting Director of Enugu zonal Directorate of the EFCC, Mohammed Bello, who represented the EFCC chairman, Ola Olukoyode stated that even though corruption affects every age group, it bites harder against the prospects and possibilities of youths.

β€œYouths can unite against corruption by exposing tendencies and actions that run counter to accountability and right values in their neighborhood. This is simply a whistle blowing opportunity for the youths,” the EFCC chairman advised.
