Operatives of the Anambra State Police Command have detained a 26-year-old man, Chibunna Nwafor, in connection with the brutal killing of a pregnant nurse in Ogbunike, Oyi Local Government Area.
Nwafor, also known as “Offonwadile”, is alleged to be a native doctor who masterminded the crime alongside accomplices. Police sources say the victim was murdered in July 2025 after being lured to a friend’s home under the guise of providing medical assistance.
Her body was reportedly mutilated, with parts said to have been taken to a shrine.
The friend accused of luring the nurse was arrested on 29 July 2025 following information supplied by members of the community. However, Nwafor, described by investigators as a principal suspect, evaded arrest and had remained at large until this week.
In a statement issued on Friday, police spokesperson Tochukwu Ikenga disclosed that the suspect was apprehended on 11 February 2026 after what he described as sustained intelligence-led operations supported by residents.
According to Ikenga, officers tracked Nwafor to a hideout in Umueri community in Anambra East Local Government Area, where he was taken into custody as part of the continuing investigation into the killing.
He said the suspect has since been transferred to a higher investigative formation for further discreet enquiries.
Part of the statement read: “The Anambra State Police Command, through sustained community collaboration and intelligence-driven efforts, took into custody on February 11, 2026, one of the prime suspects in the gruesome murder of a pregnant nurse whose body was mutilated in Ogbunike, Oyi Local Government Area.
“The suspect, identified as Chibunna Nwafor (male), aged 26 years and also known as ‘Offonwadile,’ was apprehended in his hideout at Umueri Community as part of the Command’s ongoing investigation into the tragic incident.
“Meanwhile, the Command has handed the suspect over to the Police higher investigative formation for discreet investigative proceedings.”
The Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu, commended residents whose cooperation and timely intelligence aided the arrest, assuring that everyone linked to the crime would be brought to justice.
Police added that investigations are continuing and further developments will be communicated in due course.
