The Labour Party (LP) faction led by Julius Abure has accused the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) of working to undermine democracy ahead of the August 16 bye-elections.
The faction alleged that INEC is plotting to exclude its candidates from the polls despite a Supreme Court judgement recognising Abure as the party’s authentic national chairman.
Obiora Ifoh, LP’s national publicity secretary, said in a statement on Tuesday that the party had taken the matter to court.
“The leadership of the Labour Party has warned that if the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) goes ahead to conduct the August 16, 2025 bye-election without publishing the names of its candidates and ensuring the appearance of its logo on the ballot, it will seek the nullification of the election in line with the provisions of the law,” Ifoh said.
He urged well-meaning Nigerians to prevail on Mahmood Yakubu, INEC chair, to respect the constitution and electoral act.
According to the LP, the Electoral Act 2022 provides that any political party excluded from an election can approach the court for redress.
The party accused INEC of “gambling with huge national resources” by holding elections that could be voided.
“We will not be helpless, as the law provides adequate remedies for any act or omission by the commission that shortchanges a political party or damages its image,” Ifoh said.
The party questioned what interest INEC was protecting by “throwing the country into unnecessary crisis” and “incurring colossal financial waste”.
Citing a Supreme Court judgment of April 4, 2025, LP said issues of party leadership are internal matters.
“By virtue of the party’s internal mechanism, the Labour Party held a convention on March 27, 2024, in Nnewi, which produced the current leadership led by Barrister Julius Abure. One wonders what the problem is with INEC,” the statement read.
