Ijebu, Remo Align, Seek Creation Of Ijebu-Remo State

Senator Gbenga Daniel, representing Ogun East and a former governor of Ogun State, has announced a shift in the state creation agenda pursued by the Remo people.

Speaking on Sunday at the 4th edition of the Asiwaju of Remo Christians Choir Festival in Sagamu, Daniel disclosed that Remo indigenes have resolved to pursue the creation of Ijebu-Remo State in partnership with their Ijebu kinsmen, abandoning the earlier call for a separate Remo State.

The senator, who sponsored the event held at the Abraham’s Tabernacle Ecumenical Worship Centre, said the decision was made with the understanding that Remo identity and culture must be preserved.

ā€œThe people of Remo have agreed to go with their Ijebu kinsmen if their culture and identity will not be swallowed under the guise of state creation,ā€ Daniel stated. ā€œThey have therefore demanded that the new state should be called Ijebu-Remo State, just like it is in the case of Akwa Ibom State.ā€

During the event, Daniel also used the opportunity to commend President Bola Tinubu’s ongoing reforms. He urged Nigerians to focus on the broader outcomes of Tinubu’s policies rather than the temporary discomforts associated with them.

ā€œWhile people may tend to be talking about some little challenges that have come with the steps taken to re-engineer governance in the country, it is also always good to remind the people of the exciting and desired progress being made under Tinubu,ā€ he said.

He cited examples, including changes in local government funding and the establishment of regional development structures.

ā€œFor instance, for some years now, the local governments that are the closest to the people were not functional, they were not funded and could not do anything to improve the life of the people at the grassroots. But in the last few months, with the efforts of President Tinubu, all of these are changing. Money is now being released to our local governments,ā€ Daniel said.

He also referred to the recent establishment of the Southwest Development Commission, which he described as an important shift.

ā€œSometimes last year, we started an experiment on the Development Commissions. When we started this process, many thought that it was not going to happen, but today the President has assented to this bill. What this means is that aside from the federal, the state, and the local government, we now have a quasi-regional government,ā€ he said.

Daniel added that the removal of petrol subsidies has resulted in increased monthly allocations to states and expressed optimism that tax reforms expected to become operational next year would further boost state revenues.
Speaking further, he said, ā€œPresident Tinubu is embarking on lots of quiet revolutions to enhance national stability, good governance and shared prosperity. Nigerians should lend their support to build a nation we can all be proud of.ā€

Also speaking at the event, the Akarigbo and paramount ruler of Remo land, Oba Babatunde Ajayi, stated that Remo people are not in opposition to Ijebu in the state creation process.

ā€œWhat the Remo people are only saying is that they should not be trampled upon, and that the state creation should also factor in their identity,ā€ the monarch said. He also commended Senator Daniel for being transparent in his approach to the matter.

Ondo State Governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, represented by his deputy Dr. Olaide Adelani, attended the event as the special guest of honour and commended the senator’s efforts in promoting worship through music.
