Former presidential aide, Reno Omokri, has argued that the notion of Sunday as a holy day is not rooted in scripture but instead stems from European cultural practices.
Reacting to criticisms that followed his viral video calling for greater equity for Muslims in Nigeria’s official work week, Omokri dismissed claims that he was supporting a religion perceived by some as oppressive to women.
He explained that in Israel, a country many Nigerian Christians regard as a model of religious devotion, Sunday is a workday. He added that the association of Sunday with holiness originated from sun worship in Europe rather than biblical teaching.
In a statement on his verified X account on Saturday, he wrote partly, “I have been to Israel, a country Nigerian Christians look up to as a place of religious excellence, and in Israel, Sunday is a workday.
“I hope these religionists will still shout, ‘God of Israel!’
”The idea of Sunday as a holy day is not Scriptural and comes entirely from European culture. Historically, it was a day to worship the sun god. It was incorporated as a day of worship in Europe out of a desire not to upset their already established work week.”
Omokri rejected the claim that Islam inherently oppresses women, stressing that oppression arises only from misinterpretations and misguided practices of the faith.
He maintained that women in Islam enjoy clearer inheritance rights than in many cultural systems in Nigeria, noting that the Quran explicitly codifies women’s rights to inheritance, even where a man has only daughters.
“Now, to those who say Islam oppresses women. That is just plain ignorance. Yes, some people, who have a wrong interpretation and, therefore, a misguided practice of Islam, oppress women.
“We have such elements in all Abrahamic religions. However, women are more empowered in Islam than in many Western Christian nations.
“First of all, let us talk about inheritance rights. Even in Nigeria, there are so-called civilised Southern ethnic nationalities under whose culture, women have little or no inheritance rights.
“Such a thing is unthinkable in Islam. The inherited rights of women are codified in the very fons et origo of that religion, al-Quran.
“Women’s inheritance is so well defined in Islam that even if a man has only daughters, they still inherit. Have daughters in some places in Southern Nigeria that ’empower’ women and by the night of the day you die, your brothers will throw your daughters and their mother out of your own home.”
Citing global examples, he pointed out that several Muslim-majority countries have produced female leaders.
Omokri further argued that Northern Nigerian Muslim women have been more successful in electoral politics than many of their counterparts elsewhere in the country, insisting that, by political leadership statistics, Muslim societies are ahead in empowering women.
