I Felt Like Hitting Obasanjo With Microphone At My Party – Ayo Fayose

Former Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose, has revealed that he became so enraged during his 65th birthday celebration that he briefly felt like grabbing the microphone and hitting former President Olusegun Obasanjo with it.

Speaking in an interview with AF24 News, posted on YouTube on Monday, Fayose recounted the events of the Lagos ceremony and detailed why Obasanjo’s remarks provoked him.

Recall that Obasanjo, while speaking at the event, revisited his long-standing feud with Fayose, describing the former governor as “not the best” of his political protégés—though he also acknowledged his political accomplishments.

According to Fayose, the comment reopened old wounds.

“I was enraged. I felt like taking the mic from Obasanjo’s hand and hitting it on his head. This is being sincere,” he said.

Fayose explained that two weeks before the birthday ceremony, he made deliberate efforts to reconcile with several political rivals and decided to reach out to Obasanjo through a mutual contact, Osita Chidoka.

However, he insisted that the call was not an apology.

“I never called to apologise to Baba. I did not offend him. He was the one who removed me from office. If anybody should apologise, it is he,” he stated.

He added that during a visit to Obasanjo’s residence, the former president warmly welcomed him and assured him of his attendance at the celebration, despite having another engagement in Rwanda.

Fayose disclosed that he supported Obasanjo’s travel plans.

“We took pictures together. All in good faith. I changed $20,000 and gave it to him. How can you accept somebody’s money and come and be spitting on that person?” he asked.

The former governor noted that tension heightened when Obasanjo insisted on speaking last at the event, a move that made him “suspicious.” He claimed that the elder statesman later instructed the moderator to invite Vice President Kashim Shettima before his own turn.

Obasanjo then requested that Fayose and his wife stand beside him throughout a speech that lasted one hour and 14 minutes.

“How do you say such things to a man on his 65th birthday?” Fayose asked, describing the speech as laced with “subtle jabs.”

Despite feeling deeply insulted, Fayose said he maintained his composure out of respect for the vice president’s presence.

“To show maturity—not by age but by self-respect—I kept my cool,” he added.
Fayose concluded that Obasanjo’s conduct showed he had no intention of genuine reconciliation.

“If I knew this was how it would end, what do I need Obasanjo for? Am I contesting election? Do I need his validation? No,” he said.
