‘I Don’t Need International Law,’ Trump Reveals One Thing That Can Stop Him

United States President, Donald Trump, has said his power as the president of the U.S is constrained only by his personal sense of morality, declaring: “I don’t need international law.”

Speaking in a new interview with the New York Times, Trump said the only limit to his authority is “my own morality, my own mind”.

“It’s the only thing that can stop me,” he said, adding: “I’m not looking to hurt people.” While acknowledging that his administration does follow international law, Trump qualified the position, saying: “I do”, but added: “It depends on what your definition of international law is.”

The comments come as his administration considers “a range of options” to gain control of Greenland, an issue on which Trump stressed the importance of outright ownership.

“Ownership is very important,” he said. “Because that’s what I feel is psychologically needed for success. I think that ownership gives you a thing that you can’t do with, you’re talking about a lease or a treaty. Ownership gives you things and elements that you can’t get from just signing a document.”

Trump also rejected suggestions that his move to oust Nicolás Maduro as Venezuela’s president could encourage similar actions by China against Taiwan or by Russia in Ukraine.

Defending US actions against Venezuela, he repeated his disputed claim that Maduro had sent gang members into the United States.

“This was a real threat … You didn’t have people pouring into China. You didn’t have drugs pouring into China. You didn’t have all of the bad things that we’ve had. You didn’t have the jails of Taiwan opened up and the people pouring into China,” Trump said, adding that no criminals were “pouring into Russia”.

On China and Taiwan, Trump said he did not believe President Xi Jinping would move to seize the island. “That’s up to him, what he’s going to be doing. But you know, I’ve expressed to him that I would be very unhappy if he did that and I don’t think he’ll do that. I hope he doesn’t,” he told the newspaper.

Trump added: “He may do it after we have a different president but I don’t think he’s going to do it with me as president.”

He also played down concerns over the last remaining arms control treaty between the US and Russia, which is due to expire next month.

“If it expires, it expires,” Trump said. “We’ll just do a better agreement.” He added that China should be part of future deals, saying: “You probably want to get a couple of other players involved also.”

The interview comes amid rising domestic tensions in the US following ICE’s fatal shooting of a woman in Minneapolis on Wednesday, which triggered widespread protests, as well as growing strain in relations with European allies over the prospect of a US takeover of Greenland.
