President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has described the economic difficulties experienced by Nigerians in recent years as the “pain of a painful surgery,” assuring citizens that recovery and growth are now within reach.
He made the remarks during the coronation of the 44th Olubadan of Ibadanland, His Imperial Majesty Oba Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja, at Mapo Hall in Ibadan on Friday.
Addressing a crowd that included governors, traditional rulers, legislators, and senior federal officials, Tinubu acknowledged the challenges caused by reforms implemented since he assumed office.
“To many of you here present, today I’m honoured and I’m very proud to give you the cheering news that the economy has turned the corner. There is a bright light at the end of the tunnel. Your suffering is a pain, a pain of a painful surgery, but it is now returned to the moment of growth and prosperity that awaits us ahead,” the president said.
He commended Nigerians for their perseverance, patience, and endurance, emphasising that the reforms were necessary to stabilize the economy and lay the foundation for sustainable development.
“Thank you for your perseverance. Thank you for your endurance and thank you for your understanding,” Tinubu said.
Oyo Governor Seyi Makinde, who presented the Staff of Office to the new Olubadan, described the event as a historic occasion for Ibadanland, marking the succession of Oba Ladoja following the death of the 43rd Olubadan, Oba Owolabi Olakulehin, in July 2025.
Ladoja had ascended the throne nearly three months after his predecessor’s demise, receiving traditional symbols of authority, including the white crown at the Ose Meji Temple and the Akoko leaf at Labosinde Compound.
The coronation drew a wide array of dignitaries, including former governors, first-class monarchs, Senators, House of Representatives members, and state lawmakers.
Among the traditional rulers present were the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammadu Sa’ad Abubakar III, the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Akeem Owoade, and the Olugbo of Ugbo Kingdom, Oba Fredrick Obateru Akinruntan. Governors from Ondo, Osun, and Ekiti states were also in attendance, alongside members of the Federal Executive Council.
