Suspected gunmen struck on Monday morning along Awosika Avenue in the Bodija area of Ibadan, Oyo State, dispossessing a bank depositor of a substantial amount of money and injuring a police officer who attempted to stop their operation.
According to reports, the victim, who was conveying cash from a popular frozen fish depot to a new generation bank in a metallic grey Nissan Primera with registration number EPE 901 PS, was trailed by the gunmen before the attack.
Eyewitnesses said the gunmen, who had been following the vehicle, blocked it at about 8:00 a.m. near the bank and began shooting, forcing the driver to stop. They then carted away an undisclosed but significant amount of cash.
During the incident, a police officer on routine patrol in the area attempted to intervene but was severely injured in a gunfire exchange with the suspects. He was later taken to a hospital, where he is currently receiving medical attention.
Confirming the incident in a statement, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), CSP Adewale Osifeso, said preliminary investigations showed that the patrol team engaged the gunmen in an effort to prevent further attacks.
“Fortunately, there have been no reported fatalities, and the injured officer is currently receiving immediate medical attention at a secure healthcare facility,” Osifeso said.
He urged members of the public to provide credible information that could assist the police in tracking down the suspects, adding that an extensive investigation is underway and updates would be communicated as they become available.
