Grandmother Flees After Abortion For Minor R@ped By Cleric

A grandmother identified as Mrs Otabor has fled her home over illegal abortion procedure for her 15-year-old granddaughter by a ‘local nurse’.

The suspected grandmother ran away from her Ogiemwenken Street, Upper Uwa quarter of Benin City, Edo State after the abortion on the stepdaughter who was allegedly raped and impregnated by a self-proclaimed Prophet.

However, the husband of the woman in her sixties, Mr Jeremiah Otabor, pledged full cooperation towards the prosecution of the 70-year-old suspect, Prophet Paul Lawani who has been arrested by the police.

Lawani was accused of defiling and impregnated the 15-year-old granddaughter which he allegedly raped in his church in August 2024.

Narrating her ordeal, the victim alleged that she was sexually abused in his church by Lawani when she returned from an errand he sent her, and thereafter forced her to take oath of secrecy at the church altar and threatened her with death if she disclosed it to anyone.

However, the victim confided in her grandmother who noticed sign of pregnancy symptoms in her body.

Consequently, the victim’s grandmother invited a local nurse, who ran a pregnancy test on the victim and discovered that she was two months pregnant, and aborted the pregnancy to conceal the crime.

Worried by the cover-up by her grandmother, the victim said she eventually opened up to one of her neighbours who alerted the police leading to the arrest of Prophet Lawani.

The suspect upon arrest admitted to knowing the victim in the neighbourhood, but failed to give details about the illicit act that occurred in his church located on Iyeide Street in Benin City.

Narrating the incident, the victim added, “When I got to his church office, he forced me to remove my pant. When I shouted, nobody came and he had his way.

“He (Lawani) took me to his altar and swear that I will die if I tell anyone what happened. My mother called me one day and checked and brought a nurse who said I was two months pregnant”.

The grandfather of the victim said, “I am aware of the incident. He (Lawani) is a criminal, but I don’t want to cause any problem”.

Spokesman of Edo State Police Command, CSP Moses Yamu confirmed Lawani’s arrest in connection to the incident.

He stated that investigations were ongoing to truly unravel the circumstances surrounding the case.

“The case has been reported to us. The Command’s Family Unit is currently investigating the case. As soon as the investigation is concluded, we will let members of the public know the outcome of that investigation”, CSP Yamu assured.
