Ghana Arrests 48 Suspected Nigerian Cybercriminals In Overnight Raid

Ghanaian security agencies have arrested 48 suspected cyber criminals in a coordinated, intelligence-led operation in the Greater Accra Region.

The arrests were carried out by the Cyber Security Authority (CSA) in collaboration with the National Security and the Ghana Police Service during a nighttime operation at the Dawhenya part of Ghana.

CSA said the operation was conducted in the early hours of Wednesday and covered four locations within the Dawhenya enclave.

Authorities said the suspects comprise 46 males and two females who are believed, based on preliminary interrogation, to be Nigerian nationals.

“They are linked to several cyber-related criminal activities, including romance scams, online investment fraud, impersonation schemes and illicit online gold trading,” the statement said.

Security operatives recovered 54 laptops, 39 mobile phones, one Starlink internet device and eight MTN TurboNet routers during the raid.

Ghana’s Minister of Communications, Digital Economy and Innovations, Sam George, confirmed the arrests, describing the operation as a coordinated intelligence-led effort spearheaded by the CSA with support from National Security and the police.

He said Ghana would continue to carry out “intelligence-led surgical strikes” against organised cybercrime networks to protect the country’s digital ecosystem.

“Ghana welcomes everyone interested in legitimate enterprise. We will remain a hostile domain for cyber criminals,” the minister said.

Mr George also commended the security operatives involved in the operation for their professionalism, describing their conduct as reflective of the global reputation of Ghana’s security services.
