Ghana Agrees To Accept Several Nigerians, Other Deported West Africans From US

Ghana has agreed to accept several Nigerians and other West Africans deported from the United States, becoming the latest country to cooperate with Washington’s campaign against undocumented migrants.

President John Mahama confirmed that nationals from different West African countries would now be received in Ghana following a bilateral agreement with the US, noting that 14 had already arrived.

He pointed to the Ecowas free movement protocol, which permits citizens of member states to enter and live in other West African nations without visas.

Last month, the US deported seven migrants to Rwanda, while in the previous month, five were sent to Eswatini and eight others to South Sudan.

According to the BBC, Mahama disclosed that the 14 deportees sent to Ghana included “several” Nigerians and a Gambian. While he did not reveal the total number of deportees Ghana was expected to receive, he said arrangements had been made to transport the Nigerians back home by bus, while the Gambian was still being assisted to return.

“We were approached by the US to accept third-party nationals who were being removed from the US. And we agreed with them that West African nationals were acceptable,” Mahama said. “All our fellow West African nationals don’t need visas to come to our country,” he added.

On Ghana’s relations with Washington, Mahama described the situation as a “tightening one”, citing increased US tariffs on Ghanaian goods and visa restrictions on its nationals. He however maintained that ties remained positive.

The Trump administration has been engaging several African countries to take in deportees as part of its broader clampdown on immigration.

Some of those deported have been citizens of countries such as Jamaica, Vietnam and Laos, a move that rights groups say infringes on their basic rights.

While some countries have resisted the deportation plan, Tribune Online reports that Nigeria has openly opposed it, stressing that it would not yield to US pressure to accept deportees.
