The Anambra State Police Command has confirmed the tragic incident that occurred in Ogidi, Idemili North Local Government Area of the State, where four siblings lost their lives in the early hours of Tuesday, May 6, 2025, following a suspected case of food poisoning.
Their mother, who also reportedly consumed the same meal, is battling for her life in a critical condition at a local hospital.
The Public Relations Officer of the Anambra State Police Command, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed the incident in a statement on Wednesday, stating that officers from the Ogidi Division responded promptly to a distress call from the victims’ family.
Ikenga said the officers arrived at the scene and recovered the bodies of the deceased children, which have since been deposited in a morgue for preservation and autopsy.
He added that the children’s mother, whose identity remains undisclosed, is currently receiving intensive medical care.
According to him, her survival and eventual account will be vital in uncovering the circumstances surrounding the tragic event.
“In the course of preliminary investigations, the police obtained samples of the suspected food, which have been forwarded for forensic analysis to determine the actual cause of the incident.
“Officers are also conducting interviews with residents and other potential witnesses within the neighborhood to gather relevant information that may aid the ongoing investigation,” Ikenga stated.
He said that while reacting to the incident, the Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu, expressed deep sorrow and extended condolences to the bereaved family.
The CP assured the public that the investigation would be thorough and that all efforts were being made to uncover the truth behind the fatal occurrence.
“This is a deeply saddening event, and our thoughts are with the family during this difficult time,” the police statement added.
“We are committed to ensuring that no stone is left unturned as we seek to understand and address the root cause of this tragedy.”
