The United States has carried out a military operation targeting Iran’s Kharg Island, President Donald Trump announced on X on Saturday.
The strike focused on Iran’s military facilities while sparing the island’s oil infrastructure, which the President said he had chosen not to destroy for reasons of decency.
Trump described the operation as one of the most powerful bombing raids in the history of the Middle East.
Trump said the US had “totally obliterated every MILITARY target in Iran’s crown jewel, Kharg Island.”
He emphasised Iran’s limited defensive capabilities, stating: “Iran has NO ability to defend anything that we want to attack There is nothing they can do about it! Iran will NEVER have a nuclear weapon, nor will it have the ability to threaten the United States of America, the Middle East or, for that matter, the World! Iran’s Military, and all others involved with this Terrorist Regime, would be wise to lay down their arms, and save what’s left of their country, which isn’t much! Thank you for your attention to this matter.”
Trump also highlighted the state of the US military, saying: “During my First Term, and currently, I rebuilt our Military into the Most Lethal, Powerful, and Effective Force, by far, anywhere in the World.”
He warned that any interference with the free passage of ships through the Strait of Hormuz could lead him to reconsider his decision to spare the oil infrastructure.
Kharg Island is a strategic site for Iran’s military and oil operations. The strike drew attention to the US ability to target key facilities in the region.
The White House did not provide information on casualties or the timing of the raid, focusing instead on military capability and deterrence.
Meanwhile, tensions between the United States and Iran have escalated sharply following a series of military strikes in early 2026.
The conflict intensified after US and Israeli forces carried out coordinated airstrikes targeting Iranian nuclear and military infrastructure.
The strikes reportedly killed Iran’s supreme leader and caused significant damage to strategic sites. In retaliation, Iran launched missile and drone attacks against US military installations and allied targets in the region, including bases in Kuwait and Bahrain.
Maritime security has also been affected, particularly in the Strait of Hormuz, a key shipping route for global oil. Iranian forces have restricted vessel movements and targeted commercial shipping, prompting the US to reinforce its military presence in the Gulf to protect maritime traffic.
Casualty reports indicate hundreds of deaths and injuries. In Iran, at least 168 children were reported killed in an airstrike on a school, while several US service members were killed or injured in separate attacks on military bases.
Civilians and military personnel in Gulf states have also been affected by missile and drone strikes.
