Nigeriaβs Tobi Amusan claimed the silver medal in the womenβs 100m hurdles at the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo on Monday, running 12.29 seconds in a fiercely contested final.
The world record holder produced a strong race from start to finish but had to settle for second place behind Switzerlandβs Ditaji Kambundji, who stormed to gold in a national record of 12.24s.
Grace Stark of the United States clinched bronze with 12.34s, while Masai Russell finished fourth in 12.44s.
Amusan, 28, was bidding to reclaim the world title she famously won in Oregon in 2022, where she became the first Nigerian and the first African to win the 100m hurdles crown.
Despite not taking gold this time, her silver medal adds to an already remarkable rΓ©sumΓ© that includes a world record of 12.12s, multiple Diamond League victories, and a Commonwealth Games title.
Having failed to make it to the finals at the last Olympic Games in Paris, Amusan has proved her critics wrong and shown that she still has the speed in her feet.
Nigeriaβs hope for another medal in Tokyo lies in Ezekiel Nathaniel who is through to the semi final of the menβs 400m Hurdles event.
Nathaniel, who has steadily grown into one of Africaβs leading hurdlers, clocked a time of 48.37 seconds to book his place in the semifinals.
The 21-year-old held his composure through the race, finishing strongly to edge out a competitive field.
He will be hoping to progress from Wednesdayβs semi final before eyeing a medal in the final.
