FLASH: Senate Confirms Kekere-Ekun As Substantive Chief Justice Of Nigeria

The Nigerian Senate has confirmed Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun as the substantive Chief Justice of Nigeria, following a screening process.

This development comes on the heels of President Bola Tinubu’s letter to the Senate, requesting her confirmation as CJN, as empowered by Section 231(1) of the Nigerian Constitution.

Justice Kekere-Ekun, who has been serving as Acting CJN since Justice Olukayode Ariwoola’s retirement last month, vowed to enforce a zero-tolerance policy on corruption in the judiciary during her screening.

She also assured that her administration will maintain the integrity of the judiciary by ensuring full compliance with the code of conduct and promptly attending to petitions.

With this confirmation, Justice Kekere-Ekun becomes the 23rd Chief Justice of Nigeria and the second female jurist to hold this position, after Justice Aloma Mariam Mukhtar who served from July 2012 to November 2014.

Justice Kekere-Ekun appeared before the Senate on Wednesday for screening and confirmation as the substantive Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN).

This session followed a letter from President Tinubu, presented by Senate President Godswill Akpabio during Tuesday’s plenary session.

During the screening, Kekere-Ekun emphasised the importance of concluding all pre-election matters at the Court of Appeal.

“All pre-election matters will terminate at the Court of Appeal. I have zero tolerance for corruption,” she stated, adding that she would not tolerate any form of corruption in the judiciary.

In his letter to the Senate, President Tinubu invoked Section 231(1) of the Nigerian Constitution, which grants the President the authority to appoint a Chief Justice, subject to Senate confirmation and the recommendation of the National Judicial Council.

“I hereby forward the nomination of Honourable Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, CON, for confirmation as the Chief Justice of Nigeria,” Tinubu wrote, urging the Senate to promptly consider and approve the nomination.

The Senate President referred her nomination to the Committee of the Whole for further deliberation on Wednesday.

During the session, the Senate temporarily suspended its standing rules, allowing the entry of visitors, including Supreme Court judges, judicial officers, and senior presidential aides overseeing National Assembly matters.
