The Nigeria Police have taken Nnamdi Kanuβs lawyer, Aloy Ejimakor, his brother Prince Emmanuel Kanu, and 10 other people to court.
This follows the #FreeNnamdiKanuNow protest that took place in Abuja on Monday.
A court document confirming the charges was shared on X (formerly Twitter) by Prof. Chidi Odinkalu, a former chairman of the Human Rights Commission of Nigeria (HRCN).
According to the police, the group is being charged for inciting disturbance and breaching public peace by disobeying a court order.
The police accused them of blocking traffic, denying people free movement, and chanting war songs while demanding Nnamdi Kanuβs release.
Earlier, Benjamin Hundeyin, the Force Public Relations Officer, said during an interview on Channels Televisionβs Politics Today that the suspects would be taken to court after investigations.
He explained that the police arrested Kanuβs brother, his lawyer, and six others near Transcorp area in Abuja because they insisted on entering restricted areas during the protest.
Hundeyin said:
βWe arrested them because they tried to force their way into restricted zones.
They are now at the State CID. After our investigation, anyone who broke the law or ignored the court order will face prosecution. We expect to complete this quickly, and theyβll be charged to court within 24 hours.β
The police earlier warned that anyone who violated the ban on public protests for Nnamdi Kanu would be arrested and prosecuted.
