Kings Park Rangers, a non-league football club in England, have announced the death of Saburi Olayinka Adeniji, a Nigerian player for the club.
According to the Halstead-based club, Adeniji, who played as a winger, was pronounced dead at Queen’s Hospital on Friday after staying in a coma for over three weeks due to a severe brain stem injury.
He is survived by his wife and four-year-old daughter, based in Nigeria, with a GoFundMe campaign soliciting funds to help Adeniji’s family visit him before the hospital pulled the plug.
The family, however, arrived in the UK on Saturday, a day after he was declared dead.
It is unclear how Adeniji sustained his injury, but the club, playing in the Eastern Counties League Division One North, first notified the public of the player’s medical condition through a post on its Facebook page on January 17, urging prayers for Adeniji.
Adeniji was admitted to intensive care on January 15 and was classified as brain dead afterwards due to his rapidly deteriorating state.
The hospital, however, compassionately delayed removing the life support to allow the player pass away in the family’s presence.
While still in a coma, the club already held a minute’s silence for the winger in their league match against Henley Athletic on January 31, before the club announced his death on Saturday.
Adeniji’s death comes months after Billy Vigar, a former Arsenal youth player, died after sustaining a brain injury following a collision with a concrete wall during a non-league match against Chichester City in September.
