FLASH: Niger Drops French As Official Language, Switches To ‘Hausa’ In A Bold Break From Colonial Ties

In a landmark move that clearly reflects Niger’s growing desire to reclaim its cultural and political narrative, the country has formally removed French as an official language—elevating Hausa, a widely spoken indigenous language, to national status.

This sweeping decision was made official through the Refoundation Charter, a government framework published recently in Niger’s Official Journal and widely circulated by journalists and citizens online.

It’s a striking shift not only in language policy but also in national identity, reflecting a broader rejection of colonial-era structures that have lingered long after independence.

French had long dominated Niger’s corridors of power—from the classrooms to government offices—tracing back to the days when the country was under French colonial rule. But the tides began turning following the July 2023 military coup that ousted President Mohamed Bazoum.

With the military now firmly in control under General Abdourahamane Tiani, who has been officially appointed as transitional president for the next five years, Niger has taken clear steps to redefine its relationship with its past—and its former colonizer.French

In March 2024, Niger severed ties with the Organisation Internationale de la Francophonie (OIF), a global network of French-speaking nations.

The departure came in response to the OIF’s suspension of Niger’s membership after the coup and its continued push for a return to democratic governance. But for Niger’s current leadership, the exit was about more than politics—it was about sovereignty.

“Why must we continue to operate in a language imposed on us by foreign rulers?” one government official reportedly said during a public forum. “Our people speak Hausa, and it’s time our institutions do too.”

Hausa, already spoken by millions in Niger and neighboring West African countries, now holds official recognition, symbolizing a renewed commitment to local culture and regional solidarity. It’s also a practical choice: unlike French, Hausa is widely understood across the country, especially outside urban centers.

This cultural shift runs parallel to Niger’s recent strategic realignments. Alongside Burkina Faso and Mali—fellow members of the newly formed Alliance of Sahel States (AES)—Niger has stepped away from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), claiming that foreign interference has undermined its sovereignty. France, in particular, has drawn the ire of Nigerien authorities, who in recent months accused Paris of attempting to destabilize the country through covert means.

In January, Niger renamed several streets to strip away colonial-era names, and by November 2023, officials had already spoken openly about rewriting the country’s colonial history from “its own perspective.” That same month, France began withdrawing troops from Niger, and by December, had shut down its embassy in Niamey.

What’s happening in Niger is more than just a language change. It’s a country rewriting its story on its own terms—embracing its roots, asserting its voice, and challenging the remnants of colonial power that have shaped its institutions for far too long.

Whether this bold pivot sets a lasting precedent in the region remains to be seen, but one thing is clear: Niger is speaking a new language, in more ways than one.
