GISTSMATE MEDIA reports that a medical doctor, Salome Oboyi, has died from Lassa fever in Jos, Plateau State.
Dr. Oboyi, a Senior Resident in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology in Bingham University Teaching Hospital (BHUTH) passed away two days ago following a battle with the fever.
The Bingham University Alumni Doctors confirmed her death in a statement issued on Monday, February 2, 2026 via its official X account.
“The entire BHUTH mourns. It is with a very heavy heart I announce the passing of a dearest colleague Dr. Salome Oboyi, a Senior Resident in the department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology in BHUTH whose sad event happened 2 days ago following a battle with Lassa fever” the statement read.

Lassa fever is an endemic, acute viral hemorrhagic fever in Nigeria, with cases rising during the dry season (November–April) due to increased human-rodent contact.
In early 2025, 1,171 suspected and 290 confirmed cases caused 53 deaths, with a high 18.3% case fatality rate (CFR), predominantly in Ondo, Bauchi, and Edo states.
The virus is transmitted through contact with the feces, urine, or saliva of Mastomys natalensis rodents, often via contaminated food, household items, or direct contact with infected persons.
Data as of late January 2026 shows continued high infection rates, with 39 new confirmed cases reported in just one week in late January 2026.
The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) advises improving environmental sanitation, storing food in rodent-proof containers, and seeking early medical care, as early treatment with ribavirin increases survival rates.
