FLASH: Israel Closes Airspace, Activates Missile Alert After Attack On Iran

Israel closed its airspace to civilian flights after announcing it had carried out “preventive strikes” on Iran and activating sirens in Jerusalem.

Transportation Minister, Miri Regev, announced this on Saturday, saying, “Following the security developments, the Minister of Transportation has ordered the Director of the Israel Civil Aviation Authority to close the airspace of the State of Israel to civilian flights.

“The public is requested not to come to airports until further notice,” adding that passengers abroad should follow updates from the media and their airlines on flight schedules when the airspace reopens.

It said Israelis abroad “are requested to follow the directives and recommendations of the National Security Council,” noting that flights would resume when the security situation permits, with 24 hours’ notice.

The Israel Defence Forces (IDF) said air raid sirens were turned on across Israel proactively to alert the public to the possibility of missiles being launched toward the country.

The development came as the United States and Israel launched an attack on Iran, with the first reported strike occurring near offices linked to Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

Iranian media reported strikes in several locations, with smoke seen rising over Tehran. Iran later shut its airspace, while mobile phone services were cut.

US President, Donald Trump, said in a video posted on social media that the United States had begun “major combat operations in Iran.”

He accused Iran of continuing its nuclear programme and appealed to Iranians to “take over your government, it will be yours to take.”

Trump said American casualties were possible, noting that “that often happens in war.”

It was unclear if Khamenei was in the affected area at the time of the strike. He has not appeared publicly in recent days as tensions escalated.

An official briefed on the operation said Israeli targets included Iran’s military and intelligence assets.

Israeli Defence Minister, Israel Katz, said the action was taken “to remove threats,” without further details.

Iran has warned that any retaliation could target American personnel and bases in the region.

No casualty figures had been released as further explosions were reported in Tehran.
