Nigeria’s Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced the commencement of the nationwide Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise ahead of the 2027 general elections, with both online and in-person phases set to begin in August.
According to the electoral body, the online pre-registration portal cvr.inecnigeria.org will open to the public from August 18, 2025, allowing eligible Nigerians to initiate the voter registration process remotely.
The full in-person registration is scheduled to begin one week later, on August 25, 2025, and will take place across INEC Local Government Area offices nationwide and other designated centres. The registration exercise will run on weekdays from 9:00am to 3:00pm, Monday to Friday.
The Commission said the CVR exercise is part of efforts to update the national voters register, ensure inclusion, and provide opportunities for Nigerians who have attained voting age or those who were unable to register previously.
With this announcement, INEC has officially kick-started preparations toward the next election cycle, encouraging citizens to take advantage of both online and in-person registration opportunities to secure their voter cards.
The online portal, launched for past exercises, enables registrants to fill out their details, select appointment dates, and reduce waiting time at the physical centres.
INEC has urged political parties, civil society groups, and community leaders to mobilise and sensitise the public, particularly first-time voters, to participate in the exercise.
The Commission is expected to release further guidelines, including the list of additional designated centres, documentation required for registration, and updates on transfers, corrections, or replacements of lost or damaged Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs).
