FIFA President Gianni Infantino condemned “some Senegal players” for the “unacceptable scenes” during Sunday’s AFCON final in which the eventual champions walked off the pitch in protest at a penalty awarded to Morocco.
“We strongly condemn the behaviour of some ‘supporters’ as well as some Senegalese players and technical staff members. It is unacceptable to leave the field of play in this manner,” said Infantino in a statement sent to AFP.
GISTSMATE MEDIA reported that Senegal have won the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2025 following a dramatic 1-0 extra-time victory over host Morocco at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium on Sunday.
The match in Rabat was marked by high tension, a missed penalty, and a stunning extra-time goal from Pape Gueye.
The game ended 0-0 after 90 minutes of regulation time.
A major controversy erupted in stoppage time when Morocco was awarded a penalty after a VAR review, leading to a nearly 20-minute delay as the Senegal players walked off the pitch in protest before returning.
Morocco’s Brahim Diaz then had his chipped penalty attempt comfortably saved by goalkeeper Edouard Mendy.
In the fourth minute of extra time, Senegal broke the deadlock when midfielder Pape Gueye unleashed a powerful strike from the edge of the box into the top corner, a goal which proved to be the winner.
Senegal held on to secure their second AFCON trophy, following their first win in 2021.
