The Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Professor Ali Pate, has revealed the reason behind the Federal Government’s decision to provide free treatment for women facing pregnancy complications, including cesarean sections.
Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Friday, the Minister explained that the move aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s vision, which prioritizes the health and wellbeing of Nigerians.
According to Pate, the President is committed to reducing maternal mortality by ensuring that no woman dies due to an inability to afford critical treatments.
“(The Federal Government has approved) free treatment of emergency obstetric complications for women in the empanel facilities and that includes cesarean sections,” the Minister said during the programme.
He further clarified that the initiative covers not just cesarean sections but also other emergencies such as excessive bleeding and obstructed labour.
Pate added, “If a woman gets to a facility that is certified, the facility will be reimbursed for the care.”
Emphasizing the President’s commitment, Pate stated: “The reason for that, I cannot emphasise this enough, the President is very clear in his mind that the health and wellbeing of Nigerians is core through his own agenda and vision for the country.”
The Minister also highlighted that as part of the ongoing health sector reforms, the Federal Government has mobilized resources in collaboration with the Health Insurance Authority to ensure that empanelled facilities can claim reimbursements.
This, he noted, would “eliminate the financial burden” on women seeking treatment.
PUNCH Online in January reports that to curb maternal mortality in Nigeria, FG disbursed about N87m to support 2,819 women who benefited from the Comprehensive Emergency Obstetric and Newborn Care (CEmONC) programme.
Data from the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare revealed that the CEmONC programme covers treatment costs for the five leading causes of maternal deaths in the country, including haemorrhage, preeclampsia, sepsis, post-abortion complications, and obstructed labour.
The initiative falls under the Maternal Mortality Reduction Innovation Initiative, which is dedicated to lowering maternal and newborn mortality rates across Nigeria.
