FLASH: FG Launches University Advancement Initiative

The Federal Government has unveiled the University Advancement Initiative, a new programme designed to strengthen the financial sustainability and global competitiveness of federal universities.

The Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, announced the initiative while addressing Vice-Chancellors of federal universities at a national convening organised to formally roll out the programme.

At the event, the Federal Ministry of Education signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Nigeria Higher Education Foundation to boost university advancement structures across federal institutions.

Alausa said the partnership will focus on building institutional capacity, strengthening alumni and stakeholder engagement, and adopting internationally recognised best practices tailored to Nigeria’s higher education system.

He noted that although federal universities remain central to national development, current economic realities require smarter, diversified, and more sustainable funding models beyond traditional government financing.

The Minister explained that university advancement goes beyond fundraising, covering philanthropy, industry collaboration, governance, credibility, and long-term institutional sustainability.
