Italian fashion legend Giorgio Armani, whose timeless designs and luxury empire reshaped global style, has died at the age of 91.
His company announced on Thursday that he passed away peacefully in Milan, “surrounded by his loved ones.”
“With infinite sorrow, the Armani Group announces the passing of its creator, founder, and tireless driving force: Giorgio Armani,” the fashion house said in a statement, adding that the designer had remained active in his work until his final days.
Armani, widely regarded as the world’s most influential contemporary designer, launched his label in 1975 and quickly rose to prominence, dressing Hollywood stars and redefining red-carpet fashion.
His brand later expanded to include Emporio Armani, luxury hotels, and lifestyle ventures, cementing his status as the “king” of understated elegance.
The group said his funeral will be private, but a funeral chamber will be open to the public in Milan on Saturday and Sunday for well-wishers to pay their respects.
In recent months, Armani’s health had forced him to scale back public appearances. He cancelled his menswear show in Milan earlier this year and missed the Armani Privé presentation in Paris for the first time in 20 years, on doctors’ advice.
Still, he oversaw the collection remotely, insisting he had “approved and signed off on everything you will see.”
Tributes poured in from across Italy and beyond. Culture Minister Alessandro Giuli hailed Armani as “a leading figure in Italian culture, who was able to transform elegance into a universal language.”
“His understated and innovative style redefined the relationship between fashion, cinema, and society, leaving an indelible mark on contemporary culture,” Giuli said, describing him as both a “master of fashion” and a “recognised ambassador of Italian identity around the world.”
Armani’s death comes just weeks before celebrations marking the 50th anniversary of his eponymous label, a milestone for a man whose vision helped shape modern luxury for half a century.
