Abdullahi Umar Ganduje has resigned from his position as National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), triggering an automatic leadership transition in line with the party’s constitution.
Deputy National Chairman (North), Alhaji Bukar Dalori, is now serving as acting chairman pending further decisions by the National Executive Committee (NEC) or a party convention.
Ganduje’s resignation, which took effect on Friday, was confirmed by senior party officials in Abuja. Although his official letter cited personal health reasons, sources familiar with developments suggest political factors and internal calculations may have influenced the timing of his exit.
Staff and visitors at the party’s national secretariat were reportedly caught off guard, with some aides seen removing Ganduje’s personal belongings from his office earlier in the day.
Party insiders say discussions about the 2027 presidential race—particularly the possible selection of a vice-presidential running mate from the North-West—played a role in Ganduje’s decision.
One source explained that if the vice presidency returns to the North-West, the chairmanship would likely shift to a different region, in line with the APC’s zoning formula.
Although the national chairmanship is officially zoned to the North Central, Ganduje, from Kano in the North-West, had held the position since August 2023.
Attention is now turning to who will emerge as substantive chairman. According to multiple sources, former Nasarawa State governor and senator, Umar Tanko Al-Makura, is a strong contender.
Dalori assumes leadership under Section 14(2)(iii) of the APC Constitution, which mandates that the Deputy National Chairman shall act in the absence of the National Chairman from his zone. The party is yet to issue a formal announcement or timeline for the election or appointment of a new chairman.
Ganduje’s brief tenure was marked by internal disputes, legal challenges, and financial controversies, including allegations over high nomination fees imposed on aspirants during recent party primaries.
His departure adds another layer of uncertainty to the party’s internal power structure ahead of the 2027 elections.
