Five Recently Completed Government Projects You Should Know 

Amid rising inflation, a foreign exchange crisis and fuel price increases, Nigeria has successfully completed several major projects across the nation.

These developments include a network of new highways designed to improve connectivity, modern bridges that enhance transportation efficiency, and industrial facilities aimed at boosting local production.

As the government navigates these economic challenges, the focus on infrastructure development remains a key priority, reflecting a commitment to fostering growth and enhancing the quality of life for Nigerians.

Here are five recent completed project you should know:

1. CNG refuel stations in various States:

In response to the escalating cost of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) and NIPCO Gas Limited have commissioned twelve Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) stations nationwide.

NNPCL reported that CNG is 40 percent cheaper than PMS in Nigeria.

The newly launched stations in Lagos and Abuja are designed to help reduce transportation costs and provide motorists with a more affordable fuel alternative.

This initiative reflects the government’s efforts to enhance energy accessibility amid rising fuel prices.

2. Enugu asphalt factory

Enugu Governor Peter Mbah recently commissioned a state-of-the-art asphalt production plant constructed by his administration.

The Governor highlighted that the plant will enable the State to produce its own asphalt, which is expected to significantly reduce road construction costs. The facility is designed to produce 160 tons of asphalt per hour, equating to 2.5 tons every minute. This initiative marks a significant step toward improving infrastructure in the State.

3. Lagos red line

The Lagos Red Line, a nearly completed metro line, is undergoing testing for its first phase. This phase spans 27 kilometers, connecting Agbado in Ogun State to Oyigbo in Lagos, with plans to link the rail to the National Theatre station, allowing passengers access to Marina.

Phase one features eight stations and is designed to accommodate over 500,000 passengers daily through 37 scheduled trips. The project also includes ten vehicular overpasses and pedestrian bridges to ensure the separation of train traffic from vehicles and pedestrians.

The Red Line operates using a diesel-powered system known as Diesel Multiple Unit, which utilizes onboard diesel engines for propulsion. The Lagos State government aims to open the rail line to passengers by the end of 2024.

4. National theatre rehabilitation

The National Arts Theatre, originally constructed by the military regime of General Yakubu Gowon and completed in 1976 under the Olusegun Obasanjo administration, has undergone significant rehabilitation after years of disrepair. The completion of the theatre coincided with the Second World Black and African Festival of Arts and Culture, known as FESTAC ’77, held in January 1977.

Following the prestigious event, the monumental structure gradually fell into disrepair. In July 2021, the Bankers’ Committee of Nigeria initiated a comprehensive rehabilitation project, which was completed in August 2024.

The renovation included a complete replacement of the heating, ventilation, and air conditioning system, as well as upgrades to fire safety standards and power systems. Additionally, the water supply and sewage systems were replaced, and the interior design was modernized with the installation of advanced audio-visual lighting, a world stage engineering system, and 11 passenger lifts.

5. Mangal cement plant.

The Mangal Cement Plant, an emerging industrial project in Nigeria, marks a significant investment in the country’s cement production capacity. Located in Kogi State, the plant is part of the Mangal Group, a diversified conglomerate with interests in various sectors.

Recently completed and operational as of 2024, the cement plant is expected to enhance Nigeria’s domestic cement production, reduce reliance on imports, and support the nation’s infrastructure development initiatives. With a production capacity of 3 million tons per annum, the facility represents an investment of approximately $600 million and was constructed by Sinoma International Engineering Company.
