A former Conservative MP and justice minister, Crispin Blunt, has been fined ÂŁ1,200 after pleading guilty to possessing illegal drugs, including cannabis and crystal meth.
Blunt, 65, admitted to four drugs charges at Westminster Magistrates’ Court, following a police raid on his Surrey home in October 2023, BBC reports.
The court heard he was found with the chemical sedative GBL, cannabis and methamphetamine – commonly known as crystal meth.
Sentencing him, Deputy Chief Magistrate Tan Ikram reminded the former minister of his past public office, saying he had “served as a role model to all”.
He added, “Your actions have risked undermining confidence in all Parliamentarians by breaking the very laws you enacted.”
Blunt pleaded guilty to one count of possessing class A drugs and three charges of possession of class B drugs at the hearing on Wednesday.
In a speech lasting more than 30 minutes, he told the court he had fallen victim to a blackmail and extortion plot from his drug dealer.
He also argued he should have been acquitted on the basis that charges for possessing drugs should not exist.
Politicians have “sat with moral simplicity that drugs are bad… without regard to the appalling consequences of that simple position,” Blunt said.
He added that “first-hand experience”, including hosting drug-fuelled chemsex parties at his home in Horley, had helped inform his interest in drugs policy reform.
The case arose after officers discovered the drugs while investigating Blunt on suspicion of rape.
Surrey Police later said no further action would be taken over the allegation due to insufficient evidence after an 18-month investigation.
At the time, Blunt said he was “confident” he would not be charged.
Malcolm McHaffie, head of the CPS special crime division, had earlier said there was “sufficient evidence” to bring the case to court and that it was “in the public interest to pursue criminal proceedings”.
Blunt served in David Cameron’s government as parliamentary under-secretary of state for prisons and youth justice from 2010 to 2012.
He later chaired the Foreign Affairs Committee from 2015 to 2017 before losing the Conservative whip in October 2023 and sitting as an independent until he stood down at the 2024 general election.
