Iran’s national football team paid an emotional tribute to the over 165 schoolgirls killed by an airstrike in the country’s ongoing war with the US and Israel.
Iran played Nigeria in a friendly at the Mardan Titanic Sports Complex in Antalya on Friday.
Ahead of the kick-off, Iranian players walked onto the pitch carrying school bags, symbolising the lives of children lost in the devastating attack on the first day of the war.
On February 28, a missile hit the Shajareh Tayyebeh elementary school in Hormozgan province, Minab.
Tehran said over 175 people, including schoolgirls and teachers, were killed in the bombing. Iran has blamed a joint U.S.-Israeli strike for the attack, but an investigation is still ongoing to confirm whose missile it was that struck the school.
The incident was the beginning of a war that has claimed over 2000 lives and had Iran withdraw from the World Cup, billed to be co-hosted by the US, Mexico and Canada in the summer.
The Super Eagles of Nigeria eventually won the international friendly 2-1 with goals from Moses Simon and Akor Adams.
Nigeria will face Jordan in their final match of the window on Tuesday, while Iran will play Costa Rica.
