The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has rejected claims in a Sahara Reporters story that the Department of State Services (DSS) abducted Lagos-based lawyer Moses Oddiri on the instructions of the Commission’s Chairman over alleged diversion of community funds.
In a statement, the EFCC described the report as false and “contrived to portray the arrest of Oddiri as being linked to the EFCC Chairman’s petition regarding funds meant for host communities.” The Commission said the allegations were part of a self-serving campaign by Oddiri against communal welfare.
The controversy revolves around the Niger Delta Host Community Trust Fund, which was paid in 2024 into the accounts of two Host Community Benefit Trusts (HCBTs) in line with the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA) and OPEC guidelines. The EFCC said Oddiri had demanded the funds be diverted to his non-governmental organization (NGO), which would have been in clear violation of the law.
The EFCC explained that its Chairman directed investigations following delays in the payment of the funds. Companies found to be in default were investigated, and the funds were subsequently disbursed correctly to the HCBTs.
The Commission has since held multiple stakeholder meetings with community leaders, regulators, and oil company representatives to ensure the funds are used for projects like electricity and potable water, as prescribed by law.
The EFCC also accused Oddiri of spreading false and malicious claims against the Commission and its Chairman across various social media platforms, including Sahara Reporters. Legal actions have reportedly been initiated against him by both the EFCC Chairman and Heritage Energy Operational Services (HEOS) Ltd., and petitions have been filed with the DSS.
The Commission called on the media to report responsibly and not allow individuals with personal interests to mislead public perception.
“The EFCC remains committed to its mandate and will continue to act in the overall best interests of the nation,” the statement concluded.
