Assistant Inspector General of Police in charge of Zone 2 Command, Onikan, Lagos, AIG Adegoke Fayoade, has charged newly promoted officers to the ranks of Assistant Commissioner of Police, Chief Superintendent of Police, and Superintendents of Police, not to use their new status to collect money forcefully from members of the public.
Rather, he reminded the officers that their promotion was a call to duty, urging them to work harder to ensure that the lives and properties of Nigerians within their jurisdictions were saved.
AIG Fayoade gave the charge at the decoration of 33 newly promoted officers drawn from the Lagos and Ogun States Police commands, held at the conference hall of the zonal command.
Among the decorated officers were the Divisional Police Officer, Ejigbo, Veronica Ameh, who was elevated from the rank of Chief Superintendent of Police, CSP, to Assistant Commissioner of Police; the Zone 2 Public Relations Officer, Ummar Ayuba, and her Ogun counterpart, Omolola Odutola, who was promoted from the rank of Superintendent of Police to Chief Superintendent of Police, respectively.
Describing the promotion of about two thousand policemen from the rank of SP to CSP as record-breaking, he appreciated the Inspector General of Police and the Police Service Commission for such consideration, noting that it came at the right time and that it would boost the beneficiaries’ morale.
Addressing them, he said: “When we are giving promotions like this, it does not mean we should go to sleep; it is a call to duty. It is a call that you must work harder to do more for the country, in terms of securing the country.
“You must eschew any form of corruption in whatever way. I have always said it: once you do your job very well, Nigerians are very generous, and very kind, they will appreciate you. Don’t take money forcefully from anybody. You should do your job well, and you will be appreciated.”
“And you must also portray the image of the Force in a positive light, not to get your promotion and go back to your base and start doing things members of the public are not happy that we always do. You must improve your attitude; you must put on a very good attitude at work. You must be able to relate to members of the public very well, and show kindness to them because of your duty.”
Continuing, Fayoade said “ We have a lot of work to do as police officers and as principal security agents of the country. We must rise to the expectations of members of the public. We have no choice but to do our job diligently and make sure that at our various duty posts, we do everything to reduce crime, to bring comfort to members of the community. By the time we reduce crime and bring comfort to members of the community, correspondingly, the standard of living will improve, and people will be able to go about their normal businesses, engage in social activities, and engage in all productive activities.
“But where we have a situation where security is completely down, with no safety, it is not good for the country. So, I’m charging all of you, to go back to your units, put up more efforts, improve on our performance, and go and serve Nigerians diligently, sincerely, and committedly, so that the image of the Force can continue to rise”.
While congratulating spouses and relatives who came to cheer the decorated officers, he implored them to always pray for the personnel because of the demand of the profession and the risk associated with it.”
