Nigeria’s Dangote Petroleum Refinery has laid off a number of its Nigerian employees, according to a letter from the company reportedly seen by Reuters and confirmed by officials of the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN).
The exact number of affected workers has not been independently verified.
“Yes, it is true. We saw the letter late last night (Wednesday). I can assure you that they will recall all of them,” Daily Post reported PENGASSAN President, Festus Osifo, as saying.
The medium said the labour leader confirmed that the layoffs came less than 24 hours after a majority of refinery workers joined the union.
The company, in a memo dated September 25, 2025, and signed by Femi Adekunle, Chief General Manager of Human Asset Management, described the move as part of a “total re-organisation” following alleged sabotage in several refinery units.
According to the memo, affected workers were instructed to surrender company property to their line managers and obtain exit clearance, while the finance department was tasked with calculating their benefits and entitlements in line with their employment contracts.
Political commentator Imran Wakili had earlier shared the development on X, stating, “Dangote Refinery has officially laid off all of its Nigerian workers under the guise of ‘reorganisation’, less than 24 hours after 90% of them joined PENGASSAN.”
The management of the refinery reportedly expressed appreciation to the dismissed staff for their contributions during their tenure.
