Customs Seizes Arms, Expired Drugs, Others Worth N10 Billion In 16 Containers

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has intercepted 16 containers of contraband, including arms, ammunition, expired pharmaceuticals, prohibited foods, and counterfeit products, with a total duty paid value of more than N10 billion.

Addressing journalists at the Apapa Command on Monday, Comptroller-General of Customs, Adewale Adeniyi, said the seizures were the result of coordinated operations with other agencies, particularly the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA). He said the consignments violated national security regulations and import laws.

“Today, it gives me pleasure to announce the seizure of 16 containers of goods whose importation violates our laws and threatens our collective peace and security,” Adeniyi said.

One 40-foot container, with registration number NRSU6407089, was initially declared as carrying cleaned items.

However, after further examination by Customs and NDLEA, 202 cans of Colorado loud — a Canadian cannabis strain — were found concealed inside. Each can weighed 500 grams, making a total of 101 kilograms. Intelligence reports suggested that the container might also contain other illegal items, prompting additional scanning.

The scan revealed two pump-action rifles, 25 cartridges, a Smith & Wesson pistol with 55 rounds of ammunition, a blank round, and several accessories.

Other intercepted containers included seven carrying expired drugs and prohibited medications, three with expired food items, mainly margarine, and three loaded with banned used clothing. Over the weekend, Customs also seized a 40-foot container holding 1,290 sacks of frozen poultry products, as well as another container with the same quantity of frozen chicken.

Adeniyi also reported the seizure of a container containing 305 cartons of toothpaste concealed with beads and Jalabiya dresses. The products infringed on the trademark of a Nigerian company and were unregistered with the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC). Two additional containers of expired chest and lung tablets, also without NAFDAC registration numbers, were confiscated.

Two 40-foot containers carrying codeine-based substances were also seized. “The information that we had on these containers is linking the owners to those of the previous ones that we have made,” Adeniyi said, adding that investigations are ongoing to establish the full network of those involved.

Five suspects have been arrested in connection with the seizures, three of whom have been charged and remanded in Ikoyi Prison pending their next court appearance next month.

Adeniyi said the NCS will continue to work with local and international agencies through customs-to-customs cooperation to identify and apprehend the individuals behind the operations. “We will ensure that Nigeria does not become a dumping ground for them,” he said.
