Abdullahi Musa Huseini, a popular make-up artist known as Amuscap, has been sentenced to six months imprisonment in Kano State for abusing and mutilating the Nigerian currency.
He was convicted by Justice S.M. Shuaibu of the Federal High Court for spraying N100,000 in N1000 denominations during his wedding celebration.
The offence took place on December 6, 2024, at the Ali Jita Event Centre in Kano, where Huseini tampered with the Naira notes in public, contrary to Section 21(1) of the Central Bank of Nigeria Act, 2007.
He was charged with one count of Naira abuse and pleaded guilty upon arraignment.
Prosecution counsel Zarami Mohammed presented the facts and submitted evidence to support the charge.
Justice Shuaibu, ruling that the act was deliberate and in violation of multiple public warnings, sentenced him to six months imprisonment without the option of a fine.
Huseini’s arrest followed credible intelligence that he had intentionally defaced the currency during his own wedding, despite repeated awareness campaigns by the EFCC and other authorities.
According to a statement, the sentence has left Huseini and his family in emotional distress, turning what was meant to be a joyful occasion into a source of trauma and regret.
His relatives say they never expected a celebratory act would attract such harsh legal consequences, and they are now dealing with the psychological toll of the punishment.
The case has stirred public debate on the need for improved civic education about laws governing the handling of the Naira.
As Huseini begins his jail term, his family remains hopeful that greater awareness will help prevent similar incidents in the future.
