Civil Society Network Calls For Constructive Reflection On Nigeria’s 2024 Olympic Performance

Over 80 civil society organizations have called for constructive reflection and collective action on Nigeria’s 2024 Paris Olympic performance.

The groups, under the aegis of the Civil Society Network for Good Governance, made this disposition during a press conference on Tuesday, 13th August 2024, in Abuja.

The President of the group, Barr. Kamal Adefila, said it is crucial for Nigerians to approach the country’s performance at the just-concluded Olympics with dispassionate analysis and a constructive mindset.

“The Honorable Minister of Sports, John Enoh, has been candid in his assessment, acknowledging that Nigeria’s performance fell short of expectations. This admission is a testament to the Minister’s transparency and his commitment to addressing the root causes of the issues that plagued our Olympic campaign.

“Despite assuming office just a year before the Games, without any prior preparations in place, the Minister embarked on a determined effort to ensure that Team Nigeria was adequately supported. Yet, despite these efforts, the results did not meet the hopes of our nation,” Adefila stated.

He further urged Nigerians to recognize the Minister’s forthrightness and his willingness to take responsibility.

“The Minister’s call for a comprehensive review of the leadership and operations of our sports federations is both timely and necessary. The upcoming elections for these federations present a crucial opportunity to place the right people in positions of influence—individuals who are genuinely committed to restoring Nigeria’s sporting glory.”

“It is imperative that all stakeholders, including the private sector, come together to invest in and nurture Nigerian sports. The government alone cannot shoulder this responsibility. We need a collective effort that includes corporate sponsorship, grassroots development, and the establishment of world-class training facilities,” he added.

The group implores those seeking to exploit the situation for political gain to desist, stating that criticism should be constructive.
