China on Friday expressed condolences over the deaths of students in a missile strike on an elementary school in Iran, announcing a $200,000 humanitarian donation to support the victimsâ families.
Speaking at a regular press briefing, Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun said China was saddened by the loss of life and extended sympathies to the families affected by the attack.
âChina expresses deep condolences regarding the deaths of students in the recent attack on an Iranian elementary school and extends sincere sympathies to their families,â Guo said.
According to Xinhua News, Guo added that the Red Cross Society of China had decided to provide the Iranian Red Crescent Society with 200,000 U.S. dollars in emergency humanitarian assistance.
China said the donation would go to the parents of students killed in what it described as an âindiscriminateâ missile strike on a school in southern Iran at the start of the ongoing Middle East war.
Tehran has accused the United States and Israel of carrying out the deadly attack.
Iranian media reported that funerals were held for at least 165 people, including children, who were killed in the strike. The toll has not been independently verified.
Beijing said the humanitarian assistance would be used for âcondolences and compensationsâ to the parents of the dead students.
Guo condemned the attack, calling it a serious breach of international law.
âAttacks on schools and children constitute a more severe violation of international humanitarian law and breach the bottom line of human conscience and morality,â Guo told reporters.
âChina stands ready to continue providing necessary assistance to Iran in a humanitarian spirit to support the Iranian people through this difficult time,â he said.
A military investigation by the United States Armed Forces into the strike is ongoing. According to a report by The New York Times on Wednesday, the probe found that a US Tomahawk missile struck the school due to a targeting mistake.
Israel has denied any involvement in or knowledge of the strike.
Journalists from Agence France-Presse said they had been unable to access the location to independently verify the circumstances of the attack or the reported death toll.
Meanwhile, Donald Trump initially suggested that Iran might have been responsible for the strike, although Iran does not possess Tomahawk missiles. He later said he could âlive withâ whatever the investigation reveals.
Asked about the New York Times report on Wednesday, Trump told reporters: âI donât know about it.â
