Thailand Police Arrest 11 Nigerians Over Alleged International Romance Scam

Thai Police arrest 11 Nigerians over alleged international romance scam
Thai immigration and police authorities have arrested 11 Nigerians following the dismantling of a suspected international romance scam syndicate operating in the Muang Thong Thani area of Thailand.

The arrests were carried out on Monday during a joint operation and were reported on Thursday by local news platform Thailand News.

The operation followed months of investigation triggered by a complaint filed in late 2025 by a Thai woman in Nong Khai, who alleged she was defrauded through an online romantic relationship.

According to the report, the victim said she met a Facebook user who presented himself as a Chinese engineer. After gaining her trust through prolonged communication on Facebook and Line, the suspect allegedly claimed he was unable to access funds needed for a construction project and persuaded her to transfer more than two million baht into several mule accounts.

Police said financial tracking led to the identification of Thai account holders involved in the transactions, after which investigators uncovered a wider, organised criminal network.

The syndicate was reportedly operating from a condominium in Nonthaburi, with members assigned distinct roles such as online scammers, cash withdrawers, and account recruiters.

Based on intelligence gathered, the Immigration Bureau Commissioner, Pol Lt Gen Phanumas Boonyaluck, ordered a coordinated raid on the location. Officers reportedly found the suspects actively engaging in online romance scams using computers and mobile phones at the time of the operation.

A total of 13 suspectsโ€”11 Nigerians and two Ivoriansโ€”were arrested. Some of the suspects allegedly attempted to flee but were apprehended by operatives.

Authorities disclosed that eight of the suspects had overstayed their visas, while five Nigerians were said to have entered Thailand illegally through the Laos border. The suspects were charged with immigration-related offences, including visa overstay and illegal entry.

During the raid, officers seized 34 electronic devices, including laptops and mobile phones, which reportedly contained evidence of coordinated online scams involving impersonation of wealthy European and Asian nationals to defraud Thai and foreign women.

Investigators also said they uncovered links between the suspects and the Nong Khai complaint, as well as evidence suggesting that proceeds from the alleged scams were transferred to Nigeria through cryptocurrency channels.

Police noted that investigations are ongoing to dismantle the wider network and identify additional accomplices.

The arrests came just a week after another Nigerian was apprehended in Thailand over alleged drug-related offences.

E DON HAPPEN: Woman Attacks Husbandโ€™s โ€˜Side Chickโ€™ With Razor

A married woman, Mrs Ramatu Abbas, from Donga Local Government Area of Taraba State, has allegedly attacked a 17-year-old girl, identified as Iwasen Terhemba, with a razor blade.

Sources told the Nigerian Tribune that Mrs Abbas accused the minor of having an affair with her husband.

According to local sources, Mr Abbas had persistently made advances towards the teenager, but she reportedly declined, citing her age and his marital status.

Reports say Mr Abbasโ€™s wife, Ramatu, later became aware of the alleged advances and began issuing verbal threats against the girl. Concerned for her wardโ€™s safety, the teenagerโ€™s guardian, Jemila Savalla Wanga, reportedly approached Mrs Abbas to explain that her husband had been persistently harassing the minor and urged her to caution him.

Residents said Mrs Abbas later went to the girlโ€™s house and attacked her with a razor blade, leaving injuries on her face.

They disclosed that the attacker allegedly warned the victim and her guardian against reporting the incident to the authorities, insisting that the matter should be โ€œsettled at home.โ€

The incident, according to sources, has sparked outrage within the community, with residents calling for justice and stronger protection for minors against abuse and violence.

When contacted, police authorities in the local government confirmed the incident and said the suspect had been charged before a magistrate court in Donga.

โ€œYes, we have received the case, and from our investigation, the girl has nothing to do with Mr Abbas. In fact, our findings revealed that Mr Abbas hadn’t previously attempted to assault her, but she resisted.

โ€œThe girl is innocent. We have charged the attacker, Mrs Ramatu Abbas, to court. This is not a matter to be taken to the headquarters; she will be prosecuted here.

โ€œThe victim is currently receiving medical care at a nearby clinic,โ€ the police said.

Bandits on Wednesday evening kidnapped 100-year-old Chief Samuel Fagbemi in the Ihale community and a vigilante officer in the Kabba-Bunu local government area of the state.

The President of Ihale Development Association (IDA), Chief P. M. B. Omolewa, who confirmed the incident, has strongly condemned the gruesome attack on the Ihale community by armed bandits on Wednesday at about 4:00 p.m.

The President of the Association, who confirmed this in a statement, said that during the horrendous invasion, the assailants attacked innocent residents and abducted two respected members of the Ihale Traditional Council, thereby throwing the entire community into fear and distress.

He identified one of the victims, the Baโ€™hale (second-in-command to the Oluhale), who was abducted right in front of his residence.

Chief Samuel Fagbemi is approximately 100 years old and is physically frail, making his continued captivity extremely dangerous and life-threatening.

The second victim, Chief Zacheus Sunday Fagbemi, was abducted along Offereโ€“Ihale Road while returning home. He is not only a member of the Ihale Traditional Council but also a member of the Kogi State Vigilante Service, who has been actively involved in safeguarding lives and property in the community.

Since this unfortunate incident, the entire Ihale community has been engulfed in panic, as the safety and security of lives and property can no longer be guaranteed.

In view of this alarming situation, the Ihale Development Association urgently appeals to the Kabbaโ€“Bunu Local Government Authority, Kogi State Government, Federal Government of Nigeria, and all relevant security agencies to immediately swing into action to secure the safe and unconditional release of the abducted chiefs and put in place effective security measures to prevent a recurrence of such attacks in Ihale and its environs.

โ€œThe lives of our people must not be allowed to remain at the mercy of criminal elements. We sincerely appeal for immediate interventions,โ€ he pleaded.

Police Uncover Shrine In Lagos, Arrest 13 Suspected Kidnappers

The Lagos State Police Command has uncovered a den disguised as a shrine and operated by suspected kidnappers in the Idimu area of the state.

Operatives of the command also arrested no fewer than 13 suspects in connection with the discovery.

The Commissioner of Police, Olohundare Jimoh, who led journalists on a tour of the premises located along Pipeline Road in the community on Wednesday, said the suspects were members of a notorious โ€œone-chanceโ€ and kidnapping syndicate operating in the state.

He said the arrests followed intelligence-led stop-and-search operations carried out by police operatives in the early hours of Sunday.

According to the CP, three suspects were initially intercepted at Bode Thomas in the Surulere area of the state while operating in a vehicle allegedly used to pick up unsuspecting members of the public, especially at night and in the early hours of the morning.

He said, โ€œThe syndicate usually lured victims under the pretence of selling dollars or offering fake investment schemes that promised to double money before taking them to the shrine.

โ€œThis gang is led by one Demola Adelua, who has been operating for over eight years. He controls about six operational teams across Lagos State.

โ€œIf victims cooperate and they succeed in defrauding them, they release them. But if the victim is too smart and refuses to cooperate, they bring the person here, lock them inside this room they call a shrine, and then call their relatives to demand ransom.โ€

He stressed that the state did not have rampant cases of conventional kidnapping but noted that such โ€œone-chanceโ€ criminal gangs often escalated to kidnapping when victims refused to submit to fraud.

The police boss also noted that the gang targeted worshippers going to mosques and churches early in the morning, exploiting limited movement and low police presence at such hours.

He said, โ€œOnly two formal complaints were initially received, which prompted the command to establish tactical stop-and-search points in the identified axis.

โ€œThe three suspects arrested led us to this operational base. We conducted an on-the-spot search and recovered weapons used for their criminal activities.

โ€œFollowing the discovery, operatives raided the surrounding area and arrested additional members of the gang, bringing the total number of suspects arrested in the operation to 14,โ€ he added.

The CP disclosed that the gang operated with at least six vehicles, including a Toyota Sienna, which was used to pick victims from bus stops and other locations.

He, however, added that efforts were ongoing to recover the remaining vehicles.

During the tour, one of the suspects, Rotimi Adilola, admitted that the premises served as an operational base for the group.

Asked who owned the shrine, another suspect, Amos Ogunna, said he was responsible for the place, describing it as similar to a church.

โ€œThis is my shrine. He is my friend. I knew him through my brother, and I stayed with him in Ijegun. We are local 419. My colleagues bring customers with a motor. Sometimes people pay N100,000, sometimes N200,000,โ€ he said.

Another suspect, Emmanuel Njoku, who said he was arrested at Bode Thomas, narrated how the victims were lured.

He said, โ€œWe go there to carry people. We tell them we are going to Lagos. Somebody will say she has dollars. Anybody who is greedy will ask questions. From there, we interview the person and bring them here.โ€

Njoku claimed that those who refused to cooperate were sometimes returned after being given transport fare.

The suspect, who claimed to be about 60 years old, admitted he had been involved in the scheme for about eight years in Lagos.

A female suspect, who identified herself as Tina Willy from Akwa Ibom State, told journalists that she became involved after the death of her husband. She also confirmed that some victims had previously been fully kidnapped after refusing to cooperate.

She said, โ€œI am not working with them steadily. My husband died, and I had no money. I met my brother, who introduced me to the business, and that was how I followed them. There was a woman they carried before. She did not play along, and they called her family to pay ransom.โ€

Another suspect admitted he had earlier been imprisoned for a fraud-related offence involving N300,000, adding that he spent four months in custody.

Jimoh assured Lagos residents that the command was on top of the security situation, adding that investigations would be extended to mop up all members of the syndicate, including those coming from neighbouring states to commit crimes in Lagos.

He also announced the strengthening of the stateโ€™s security architecture with the deployment of tactical teams, including an undercover โ€œwalk-and-operateโ€ squad, a coast drive strike force, and the soon-to-be-launched anti-crime patrol and community protection squad.

โ€œI want to assure Lagosians to go about their lawful businesses without fear. Full deployment has been carried out across the nooks and crannies of the state,โ€ the CP added.

E DON HAPPEN: Unknown Persons Heap Faeces On Abia LGA Chairmanโ€™s Office

Special Adviser, Media and Publicity to the Chairman of Bende LGA of Abia State, Chimezie Princewill Okezie has raised the alarm that heaps of human faeces were discovered at the office of the Councilโ€™s Chairman, Uwabunkeonye Bassey.

According to him, the human faeces were plastered at the block that houses the office of the Executive Chairman.

Although the identity and intention of those behind the discovery were not yet known, Okezie described the scene as disturbing.

He also alleged that it was an attack on the Chairman of Bende LGA, Uwabunkeonye Bassey by his political opponents, who according to him, failed to match his achievements.

โ€œEarlier today (Wednesday) at the Bende Local Government Council Headquarters, specifically within the political block that houses the office of the Executive Chairman, a disturbing scene was met.

โ€œHeaps of human faeces as we can see in this video were deliberately plastered at the entrances of the complex, an act clearly intended to provoke, insult, and desecrate a public institution.

โ€œThis shameful display has gone beyond online propaganda and now reflects the height of desperation and pettiness by some opposition disgruntled elements who have failed to match the administration and governance of Mayor Uwabunkonye Bassey with ideasโ€, Okezie said.

He described the situation, not only as uncivilised, but an affront to the dignity of the council, its workers, and the entire people of Bende LGA, vowing that any one behind the faeces attack will face the consequences.

โ€œThe general public is hereby assured that whoever or whichever people are responsible, regardless of affiliation, will face the appropriate consequences.

โ€œActs like this cannot and will not be swept under the carpetโ€, he vowed.

FULL LIST: 177 Names Of Kidnapped Kaduna Christian Worshippers Revealed

The identities of 177 worshippers abducted from churches in Kaduna State have emerged.

Gunmen attacked three churches in Kurmin Wali community, Kajuru Local Government Area, during Sunday service. Worshippers were taken from ECWA Church and Cherubim and Seraphim Church (Churches 1 and 2).

Residents said more than 100 people were abducted in what they described as a coordinated attack.

The incident occurred barely a week after the community reportedly paid โ‚ฆ2.6 million to secure the release of 20 residents who had been kidnapped earlier, raising fresh concerns among locals.

On Monday, the Kaduna State Police Command dismissed reports of the abductions, describing them as false and asking those making the claims to produce the names of the victims.

However, GISTSMATE MEDIA later reported that the Police confirmed that armed attackers stormed the churches during service hours and abducted an unspecified number of worshippers to an unknown location.

According to the report, the attack happened around 11:25 a.m. on Sunday, but security operatives were alerted later in the day.

Police said access to the area was difficult due to poor road conditions and its closeness to forest areas. Rescue operations, they added, had begun in collaboration with other security agencies and the military.

Human rights group Christian Solidarity Worldwide Nigeria (CSW-N) also insisted that the abductions took place, accusing security operatives of stopping its team from accessing the community during a fact-finding visit.

On Wednesday morning, a detailed list containing the names of 177 abducted worshippers surfaced. A review of the list shows that entire families were taken, leaving Kurmin Wali largely deserted as residents fled in fear.

Families affected include:

Jonathanโ€™s family โ€“ 12 members
Amos family โ€“ 13 members
Markus/Makudi family โ€“ 10 members
Ishaya family โ€“ 7 members
Danisa family โ€“ 7 members
