The Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke, has led a high-level Programme Management Review meeting with senior officials of the United States Government and representatives of Bell Textron Incorporated to accelerate the delivery of 12 AH-1Z Viper attack helicopters ordered for the Nigerian Air Force (NAF).
The strategic engagement, held from January 5 to 6, 2026, in San Diego, California, reflects the NAF’s drive to boost its combat capabilities in line with Air Marshal Aneke’s Command Philosophy— to build a highly motivated, professional, and mission-ready force capable of delivering decisive airpower in synergy with surface forces to achieve national security objectives.
During the meeting, Air Marshal Aneke commended both the US Government and Bell Textron for their cooperation, professionalism, and transparency in executing the acquisition programme.
“This programme represents more than a capability upgrade,” the Air Chief stated. “It is a testament to the enduring defence partnership between Nigeria and the United States, anchored on mutual trust, shared values, and a common commitment to regional and global security.”
He urged members of the programme management team to “remain focused, innovative, and disciplined” to ensure the timely delivery of the helicopters within approved timelines and budget.
The CAS also expressed profound appreciation to President Bola Tinubu for his continued support to the Nigerian Air Force, noting that the acquisition of the AH-1Z helicopters would mark a major boost to the Service’s combat readiness and efficiency.
“The acquisition of these advanced platforms will significantly enhance the NAF’s combat capability, operational efficiency, and mission readiness,” Air Marshal Aneke said. “They will enable us to conduct precise operations, provide responsive support to ground forces, protect lives and property, and effectively eliminate terrorist and criminal threats, all while sustaining public trust and confidence in the professionalism of the Nigerian Air Force.”
The AH-1Z Viper, a modern multi-role attack helicopter, is known for its precision engagement capability, advanced targeting systems, and versatility in various combat environments. Its deployment is expected to further strengthen Nigeria’s airpower in ongoing counterterrorism and internal security operations.
